Select someone with a well-established system, such as a professional website or portfolio, that showcases their work clearly. Avoid hiring photographers solely through casual platforms like social media unless they present themselves professionally and can offer proper contracts upfront. A good system includes clear communication, prompt responses, and proper documentation, such as contracts. Unprofessional behavior—like lack of direct communication, tardy delivery of work, or poor presentation—should be a red flag.
I made the mistake of using a guy from a Facebook group. He initially never had a contract, and I had to insist on him getting one before he started the project. never called me directly on my cellphone only (via Facebook messenger even though I sent him my cell number. Turns out he was super unprofessional and showed up to the shoot drenched in weed odor. Not to mention, he delivered my photos way past our agreed upon delivery date with his logo as a watermark on my photos. These were photos I paid for beforehand to be delivered unedited. Lesson learned.

Look for Storytelling Skills

A great photographer can tell a compelling story through their images. They won't just focus on staged or "big" moments but will also capture the candid, in-between interactions that show raw emotion. Their demeanor should be warm, approachable, and professional (e.g., no offensive odors, bad hygiene, or "creepy" vibes). Schedule a casual meeting before the event to ensure their energy matches yours and the event's tone.

Reviews are an essential part of your research. While no photographer will have perfect ratings, consistent patterns in feedback—whether positive or negative—are telling. Pay close attention to client testimonials about punctuality, communication, and overall experience. Your due diligence can save you from hiring someone unreliable.
